I’m Hattie. I’m 18, from England and studying English at Cambridge.
To me writing is my escape. It channels my thoughts, my emotions and my heart. And sometimes when you can’t express how you feel, you can read the poetry of others and identify with the feelings emoted. After all, it’s the universal element of writing that makes it such an important art.
From June 2009 – January 2010 the poetry published on this site was part of an anthology called ‘Disrepair’, written in a time where I fell in love, experienced grief, etc etc. But these things are in the past now. Poetry unites us in our melancholy and can, if somewhat fleetingly, alleviate the sadness we feel.
My poetry nowadays centres mainly around the literature I read, how I identify with the characters and how I react to what goes on. Obviously I still feel sad some days. Everyone feels hurt, tired, used – I just hope I can make something out of these feelings and somehow translate them into my poetry.
My current influences are (always Keats and Shakespeare), Clare, Baudelaire, Yeats, MacNeice, Auden, Lawrence.
